Everybody around the world is talking how the Technology
Generation is now, and how they don’t know how to live without their cellphones
and laptops. In the second part of “Grown Up Digital,” it is a topic of focus
the way this new generation reacts to new products and why that happens. It way
made a study to compare the amount of money earn by college-students in part or
full times jobs annually. In my opinion it is a ridiculous amount of money that
allows us to have all of the “top” products. In my opinion this is a trend more
than a necessity. I don’t believe that each student need a phone that costs
more than five hundred dollars, or a laptop that is more that a four month of
rent for an apartment. Whenever a new product is created everybody wants to own
it, throwing away money and old devices that sometimes are in perfect
conditions. Other observation I made is that our generation does not appreciates
technology as much as our parents or grandparents. We are used to be able to open
Skype and talk to someone across the world, while people before us weren’t able
to communicate this easily.
Why is our generation obsessed with the technological
trends? It is very clearly expressed in the book some ideas and factors that
make us buy more. Starting with Freedom: the ability to choose from hundreds
and hundreds of phones makes us feel special when we have something different,
so we look forward to buy the newest or coolest product. Customization: the
possibility to change the product and make it unique and ours is a very big
thing in our generation. Scrutiny: nowadays people are able to check out
reviews in the internet about the product, and when there are positive reviews
it makes us want to buy those same products. Integrity is a big one because people
buy products from companies that they believe have the best product. A good
example of that is Apple, the majority of the people believes in it quality and
that increases the consumption of Iphones, Ipads, MacBooks and so on.
Collaboration is the next one and is huge when it comes to selling products,
because everyone feels special when their opinion is valued, so that is what
big companies try to do. Entertainment and Speed are the most important ones
for our generation and basically the main reason why they buy the products on
the first hand. They want the devices to be “fun” but fast and useful at the
same time. The last one is Innovation and is the biggest one when it comes to
trends. As I said previously we all want to have the newest products, and each
company wants to have a better product than their rivals. It is because of
those eight factors that our generation is so obsessed with technology that we
can even call it an extension of ourselves.
