My group was responsible to present information about social
media, and what we found was very impressive. We wanted to share with the class
how powerful social media is, and how negative it can be as well. We started to
explain the history of social media, and it begins way earlier than what we can
think of. The first social media was only accessible to military or business
systems. The next ones were accessible to everyone, but it was rare for people
to have the devices required to access the pages. Year by year, new social
media platforms were created and more and more people were able to access and
connect to the world. Of course there were very basic platforms in the
beginning and they evolved into the new Facebook, Instagram, and so on. We
talked about many other things, but for me, personally, the most interesting
were the statistic relevant to how technology is spread around the world. I did
not realize the number of people that have cellphones, or access to social
media/internet, and this number is amazingly high. Keeping in mind all the poor
countries that do not have money to eat, how is it possible for the technology
world around the world to be this high? The most interesting was that there are
more phone number registrations than population in the world.
The
negative effects are vey obvious because we all heard of them already, and we
know how vicious they can be. We all have that friend that need to go to social
media everyday, but this is not even the worst effect. In my opinion the self
exposition of personal information is very risky, because once you post it, you
can delete it, but people have already seen it, and you can’t take it out. This
can influence future jobs, perceptions by other people, and even crimes of
personal information stealing by anyone that can access you page.
The last
part of our presentation had the purpose of showing the social power it can
have. We talked about a situation that happen, and food was needed in a
country, so Turkish airplanes were sent with food to support the cause. But all
of this was only possible because of social media. A group of famous actors,
athletes and youtubers came together and shared this event in order to let the
world know what is happening, and in that way convinced the Turkish airline to
help. This proves that social media is huge and it can bring the world together
for a purpose.
