This blog post related to the virtual reality group
presentation was very interesting to me and showed me another side, or should I
say, one more advance of technology. Virtual reality, and as the name says, it
is a hole different and separate reality that technology has provided us with.
So far I have gotten in touch with it when I go to the movies, on a 3D movie,
that has the ability to put me inside of it and convince me that is the reality
I am on for as long as the movie goes. It is not very surprising when you
actually go and watch the movie, because we are used to it, we know it exists,
is not a big deal, so we act naturally. That is normal, but everyday technology
comes up with something new, and some of them are shockingly real. I have
actually seen a lot of videos of how elder people deal with virtual reality and
they are very surprise, barely knowing how to act, and living all the emotions
provided by the virtual reality.
Virtual reality is used mainly in entertainment such
as games or illusions. Recently those kind of games have become very popular
and they are amazing experiences for the players, who get to see how actually
driving a car at a fast speed, or shoot at criminals is. It is a way to feel on
our skin how all those realistic or no games. It is way more interactive than
normal games because the players get to feel in the skin of the characters and
to control them much more specified. Examples of virtual reality are
experienced everywhere, and during the presentation I remember an experience I had
last year. I was in Disneyland where one of attractions was to go in a room
that appeared as an elevator that was getting bigger and longer, due to special
effects that created a virtual reality.
Although this is mainly for entertainment, people were able to find a
way of using it with an important purpose. The military used virtual reality in
order to train and simulate danger and stress situations, because it is hard to
do it in real life without harming soldiers. After this “practice” it was
easier for them to face those situations on the field and real life. As
everything, virtual reality has negative effects, but because it can actually
help in a lot of everyday issues I have not mentioned in the blog post, I consider
it very positive to our society
